Madarocka to perform at Hip Hop Journalism Summit in Baltimore
Special Entertainment Report (BlackPressMagazine.com)
Hip Hop wasn't always about swiping credit cards through women's backside and violent shootings. It was about the music. The recent developments have some wondering if Hip Hop is losing its history and its culture?
Hundreds of industry insiders, record executives, performers, fans and more will gather in Baltimore, MD on September 15-16, 2006 at the Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards Hotel to discuss the influence of Hip Hop media on violence at the Hip Hop Journalism Summit during the 2nd Annual Black Press All Star Awards.
A special State of Emergency: Hip Hop Anti-Violence Town Hall Meeting will address the role of media professionals in the shootings of Obie Trice, Busta Rhymes’ bodyguard and Suge Knight and the repeated violence at urban radio station HOT97 in New York.
“It’s disturbing that someone can let off six shots in a packed club and can escape without being arrested,” Elliott Wilson told reporters in response to the shooting of Knight in a posh club on Sunday. “The Hip Hop community doesn’t trust the police….and they have done little to make us feel like they [care]….It’s a vicious cycle.”
The list of panelists for the Hip Hop Journalism Summit reads like the who’s who in the Hip Hop industry. Early bird event registration of $149 and hotel at $169 per night ends on August 18, 2006. The Marriott/Black Press All Stars group rate discount code is hbphbpa.
“From video game sex to controversial images of women in music videos and magazines, Hip Hop media violence is off the chain,” said Livers, managing editor for the event. “But is it fair to blame Hip Hop media or should the blame be shifted elsewhere? Hopefully, we’ll find the answers to these issues during our town hall meeting.”
A special segment called, “Girl Power: Empowering Women through Hip Hop,” will address issues facing Black women in the hip hop industry. Invited are rapper MC Lyte, Olivia Fox, a urban radio show host in Tampa, FL, rapper/author Sister Souljah, rapper Monie Love, Wendy Williams from the popular radio show, “On the Down Lo with Wendy Williams,” Karrine Steffans, author of Confessions of a Video Vixen, On September 17, we will hold the Girl Power Empowerment Brunch. We've added a tour of places that inspired The Wire.
Confirmed performers and panelists include Madarocka, Nigeria’s Queen of Rap, Andrew Ryan, Hip Hop professor, Jesus and Jigga author Eric Dolce and hip hop journalists.
Beyonce, Jay Z kick off BET Awards with new hit, "Deja Vu"
(BlackPressMagazine.com) Actor-singer Jamie Foxx, R&B songbird Mary J. Blige, crooner Chris Brown and rapper T.I. topped their performances at the BET Awards Tuesday night by taking home trophies. Oscar winner Foxx entered the show as the top nominee with five bids, and his name was called for best collaboration: with Kanye West on the mega hit"Gold Digger," which also won a Grammy this year.
"I want to thank everybody, just everybody," Foxx told the Shrine Auditorium crowd. "Y'all are stepping up black music," West said. "This is the best music right here, and we've got to keep on giving it to them like that."
Damon Wayans hosted Black Entertainment Television's performance-packed sixth annual awards program recognizing the best in hip-hop, R&B, gospel and music videos, as well as athletes and actors.
Rumors had been flying all week and fans were eagerly anticipating the show-stopping "Grand Opening" and "Grand Closing" of BET Awards '06, as each year proves to be more extraordinary than before. This year, the BET Awards show began with a Grand Opening collabo by America's favorite new Dreamgirl Beyonce singing the world premiere television performance of her new smash "Deja Vu" with boyfriend Jay Z. To cap the show, BET Awards '06 has the legendary Prince brought it home with the Grand Closing to this annual tribute to music, movies, sports and more with an out-of-this-world performance. Prince's song selection included blasts from the past and tracks from his new CD.
"These real-life lovebirds couple up for an exuberant jam on "Deja` Vu," leadoff single from Beyonce's new album, due in August. The song comes off like a just-restrained version of "Crazy in Love," with muted horns and Jay-Z's two rap verses mingling among the '70s soul sounds and Motown bass line. Hot stuff for the hot season," said the Detroit Free Press.
But not everyone was pleased with Beyonce's performance. Former BET Awards host and Phat Girlz actress Mo' Nique expressed concern.
"Okay, I have to address what Beyonce just did. She's forcing my hand. I'm going to start training tonight. Jay Z I'm going to need you to be my prop tonight while I get ready to show her up." Mo' Nique, who graces this month's ESSENCE magazine cover, surprised the world during a previous BET Award show with her stunning remake of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" routine.
