Michael Byrd, Natalie Gilmore, Dashira Harris Tapped for Black Press Magazine's Inaugural College Internship ProgramBlack Press Magazine interns: Natalie Gilmore (Senior) and Dashira Harris (Junior) and Michael Byrd (Junior)

Washington, DC -- (BlackPressMagazine.com)Black Press Magazine, published by the Historical Black Press Foundation has again made history, this time by selecting its first editorial interns.

Orlando, FL resident Michael Byrd, Memphis, TN native Natalie Gilmore, 21,Dashira A. Harris, 19, Brooklyn are the nation's first interns to be selected to participate in the inaugural Black Press Magazine internship program based in Washington, DC.

Already the young scribes have already made a dent in the Washington media with interviews with founder and CEO Dr. Joann Martin of the Great Black Wax Museum, Richard Prince, author of Journal-isms and District Chronicles publisher Dr. Lawrence Kaggwa, a world- renowned journalism authority. They met the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Wade Henderson, Dick Gregory and covered the 97th Annual Convention for the NAACP at which the President of the United States spoke.

Gilmore isn't afraid
of running into walls; especially walls of frustration to come as she emerges herself into the pool of aspiring and struggling Black journalists. Gilmore is quite courageous and committed to her craft. She has to be. As the only African American working at her campus newspaper, Gilmore is the Editor-in-Chief and has complete control over the entire publication from start to finish.

"You should have seen their faces when I assigned articles for Martin Luther King Day," said Gilmore who will be a graduating senior this fall.

Inspired by her mother and the current oppression of the Black community, Harris decided that becoming an investigative reporter would aid in the social and civic progression of her people. Dashira has the temperament and the face for television hopes to pursue a career in television. Her keen since of fashion coupled with her ability to absorb her surroundings will likely make her dreams a reality."I really want to work in broadcast," said Harris, who is a Black Latina fluent in Spanish and who certainly has the face for TV.

Together the interns have completed book review of "A Mighty Love," from author Anita Doreen Diggs, music reviews of The Singletons CD produced by gospel great Fred Hammond and they will spend half day in the newsroom of USA Today learning how the nation's largest newspaper is run. Stay tuned to this page for the articles. Photos by Michael Byrd for BlackPress.org

Here are just a few of the articles that the Black Press Magazine summer interns have completed:

Howard U. Senior Adds Impressive Journalism Credentials

For aspiring journalist Stacy Anderson, dedication is not only a virtue but a way of life that began early and has lead her to present day achievements. Anderson is the recipient of the 2006 Sigma Delta Chi Foundation Scholarship Award, the highest honor awarded by the Society of Professional Journalists. She was presented with the award at the SPJ Annual Dateline Awards for Excellence in Local Journalism dinner at the National Press Club last month in Washington, DC.

CD Review: The Singletons The Singleton’s Better Than That is a hit with a message for any and everybody that listens. The upbeat melodies and soulful harmonies will have any listener on their feet clapping and singing along. The songs send out a clear message of worship and praise through rhythm and blues and a neo-soulesque sound.
