State of Hip Hop: Leaders line up for Emergency Hip Hop Violence Townhall Celebrities line up for Emergency Hip Hop Violence Townhall

Save the Date: September 19-20, 2008
4th Annual Black Press All Star Awards

(BlackPressMagazine) - After fights with Chaka Zulu and rapper T.I. threatened to mar the recent BET Awards, a special State of Emergency: Hip Hop Anti-Violence Town Hall Meeting has been scheduled at the Hip Hop Journalism Summit, which takes place during the 3rd Annual Black Press All Star Awards will be held on Sept. 14-15, 2007.

Legendary filmmaker/photographer David Parks who produced the movie, "Superfly" along with his late brother Gordon Parks, Jr., joined rap icon Raheim of the Furious Five, Frank Lucas, Jr. of the American Gangster commission, Darra "Like Dat" Boyd of Charm School and others at the townhall to discuss the images of Black women in the media.

From video game sex to controversial images of women in music videos and magazines, Hip Hop media violence is off the chain. But is it fair to blame BET and other Hip Hop media or should the blame be shifted elsewhere? Hopefully, we’ll find the answers to during the town hall meeting. A special segment called, “Girl Power: Empowering Women through Hip Hop,” will address issues facing Black women in the hip hop industry including the recent canceling of the controversial show and as well as explores other issues facing Black women in the hip hop industry. A Girl Power Empowerment Brunch will be held on September 15 seeks to empower young women through Hip Hop.

The event will address the controversial “NO SNITCHING” movement which is sweeping the music industry and rap community along with the role of Hip Hop media professionals in the shootings of Obie Trice, Busta Rhymes’ bodyguard and Suge Knight and the repeated violence at urban radio station HOT97 in New York.

The list of panelists for the Hip Hop Journalism Summit for the last year read like the who’s who in the Hip Hop business. Panelists for this year's performers and panelists will include rap stars, entertainment industry execs, Africa’s top hip hop artsist, Hip Hop professors, authors and hip hop journalists from hip hop publications and websites.
