(BlackPressMagazine.com) – The phrase: 'It's a different world' might make some think of the infectious 80s sitcom starring Gary Coleman as the cute, fat-cheeked actor.
But anyone who's ever tried to peek into the hip hop media knows that it really applies to the Hip Hop Nation. Things that would never fly in the real world - or at least result in an a 'beat-down' - are fair game in the world of hip hop.
Take for instance Ozone magazine's ridiculous "Year-End Awards" that appeared in the January 2006 edition. In the article about Raymond "Benzino" Scott, who at the time co-owned Ozone's rival publication The Source. Scott was given the "Most Successful Extortionist" award, White rapper Paul Wall was given the "Realest Nigga" award and Percy "Master P" Miller was given the "Time to Retire" award.
Needless to say, Scott found no humor in his award and quickly expressed his feelings on the matter.
Unfortunately, he decided to do so during a voice mail message to Ozone publisher, Julia Beverly (left). Scott choose many colorful words to ensure that Beverly understood his position but it was his decision to call her "Slut-Monkey" that landed him in national headlines.
Beverly and Scott have since kissed and made up (well Black Press Magazine can at least confirm that they made up), but the entire exchange made many people want to know more about Beverly and Ozone, one of the fastest growing hip hop publications in the nation. Since Beverly is White some wondered how she managed to climb so high in the world of hip hop.
Black Press Magazine put that very question to Beverly with surprising results. Her demeanor, vision and responses will likely understand why Black Press Magazine named her "One of 5 People You Need to Know" within hip hop media for 2008. Kicking off the series was hip hop veteran Kim Osorio (left). During her exclusive interview with Black Press Radio.com, Osorio confirmed that she is writing a tell-all book about her experience. She inked a lucrative book deal with publishing heavyweight Pocket Books, which is an imprint of Simon and Schuster for her first book entitled, Hip Hop Diaries: The trials, the tribulations and the truth, which is due out about September 9, 2008.
"I am writing a book, it's a memoir about my own experience and my career. It deals with some of the things that happened at The Source," said Osorio, who is now the Executive Editor at BET.com, a spin off of Black Entertainment Television. "I think it's an exciting story and it's inspiring for women who have found themselves in the same type of situation," she said.
