Exclusive: Amy Ruth's knocks off Sylvia's for "king of soul food" title in Harlem

(BlackPressMagazine.com) - Once upon a time in Harlem, New York, Sylvia's Soul Food restaurant reined as "the place to go" for soul food in the upper Manhattan neighborhood. But, with treats like the Honey Chicken and Shrimp and Waffles, no wonder Amy Ruth's is knocking Sylvia's off the soul food map in Harlem.
Established in 1998, Amy Ruth's home style southern cuisine is now known as "The Authentic Soul of New York."
Born Amy Ruth Moore, the restaurant's founder and namesake was a devout Christian who married Elijah Bass, Sr. with whom she raised ten children. Today, Carl Redding, one of Ruth's grandchildren, now runs the restaurant that sits at 113 West 116th Street near Adam Clayton Powell just outside the 2 train subway stop.
"Not to be Missed" Menu Items
The Black Press Travel and Review Team sampled several menu items for our review including the "Honorable Keith Wright" (shown above) is a delicious, sticky, crunchy masterpiece of honey dipped chicken with a choice of two side dishes. We also tried the "Jennifer Holliday" which is a surprisingly scrumptious dish of fluffy waffles and perfectly cooked fried shrimp.
Other important dishes includes the "Dougie Fresh" which is Waffles and Fried Whiting fish or the Rev. Al Sharpton (Chicken and Fried Waffles). Daily entrees include the Ludacris (Fried Chicken), Honorable David Paterson (Garden Burger with Tossed Salad) or the Rev. Earl Johnson (Harlem Gumbo Shuffle). Most dishes are under $10 but a few including some of the daily entrees can reach nearly $20.00, although it's all worth every penny and then some.
