(BlackPressMagazine.com) - Hosted by the Washington Post Company and held at their headquarters in Washington, DC, the inaugural "Meet the Black Press" breakfast kicked off the 3rd Annual Black Press All Star Awards. The event, which honors Black-owned media professionals, executives and companies committed to media diversity, took place during the 180th Anniversary of America’s Black Press.
“September 14, 2007 was a magical day,” said Livers. “Imagine a Black Press breakfast at the nation's most important newspaper, with a musical tribute to Van McCoy, a speech from the son of Gordon Parks, the man who founded Essence magazine, followed by a luncheon at a venue located blocks from where former Black Press publisher Frederick Douglass bought his home. Washington, DC was the right place at the right time for all of the right reasons," said Livers.
"The Washington Post gave us more than a historic venue to have a historic breakfast, but they also gave us hope that one day Corporate media and the Black Press will be able to work in tandem to ensure that the future of America's Black Press will be preserved," said Livers. "The event fell on the day of the citywide funeral for Effi Barry, the former first lady of Washington, DC. Most organizations would have cancelled the event, but they worked as hard as we did to ensure that everyone felt the importance of the day and the cause. They even provided copies of their new book, Being a Black Man. I cannot say thank you enough to the staff of The Washington Post. Their dedication to media diversity should not be forgotten."
The late great Gordon Parks, Sr., who was famous for co-founding Essence Magazine and authoring the book, The Learning Tree, which was an autobiographical sketch of a young boy coming of age, was honored with the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD as part of the 3rd Annual Black Press All Star Awards Luncheon held at Jordan's 8 Restaurant near Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. It is the highest honor that the event awards. Past recipients include the late John H. Johnson and Earl Graves, Sr.
David Parks, 63, the son of the late legendary photographer Gordon Parks, accepted the honor on behalf of his dad during a moving acceptance speech at the "Meet the Black Press" breakfast hosted by the Washington Post.
"We need the Historical Black Press Foundation because it's important that our voices get heard," Parks told the breakfast attendees. "I know that if my dad were alive he would be supporting [the organization] and DC [Livers] so I am too," he said.
"David Parks has been more than an avid supporter of our cause; he's been a true friend to America's Black Press," said Livers. "He knows first hand the importance of what we're trying to do, so I’m honored to be a part of bringing David Parks to Washington, DC."
Other winners included Black Enterprise Magazine for "Best Black Magazine, K'wan Foye for Black Author of the Year and Drahma Magazine for "Best New Black Publication," among others. The LEGACY AWARD was presented to the late Van McCoy and the CENTENNIAL AWARD went to the Pittsburgh Courier. The award to Philadelphia Tribune for "Best Black Newspaper" accepted by Philadelphia native and reality TV star Darra "Like Dat" Boyd. Urban American Outdoors for "Best Black TV Show," The Africa Channel for "Best TV Network."
